As if the light penetrates the room each time you look at the painting, although the sun has set a long time ago, and although the centuries have long passed, and although the young woman has long turned to other occupations, and now she is probably a Professor of Arts History and Gender Studies at Berkeley, and when the class ends she opens the window and looks at the students giving away antiwar leaflets at the stand and at students eating organic salad on the lawn, and the beam of light turns to her and asks whether she would not have preferred to be twenty years younger, or sometimes, in the secrecy of her heart, three hundred and fifty years younger, to gaze lengthily at the light, a water vase in her hand, and to be proficient in things of a whole different nature.
