The Big Fan*

the big fan

In our grandparents’ generation they executed people who spoke about it. In our parents’ generation they sent them to exile. In our generation they no longer punish for it but the topic has remained a taboo. It is time we speak about it. It is time we open the books again and read, as a city, the myth of the Grand Fan. It is clear to us all that it couldn’t have made it to Tel Aviv on its on. And it is clear to us all that if somebody put it in the city square he must have had a goal. And it is completely not absurd to think that this someone wished to send a message to the future. It is time we stop fearing and stop entrenching and put all the possibilities on the table again. Even if the chance the fan is trying to tell us something is almost zero, and even if the chance that the message is based on truth is almost zero, it is time we check all the possibilities. It may be that the big fan is trying to tell us it used be less hot here. It may even be that it’s trying to tell us it used not to be humid here. It may even be that it’s trying to tell us it used to actually be cold here. And yes, it may be a destabilizing thought, but it may even be that the big fan is trying to tell us that once there was winter in Tel Aviv. We mustn’t fear searching for the truth. It may be that once there was winter in Tel Aviv.
