Aran Islands

Aran Islands

A young secretary turned to me this morning and said she has a weird question. Were you ever in Ireland? Maybe ten years ago? The minute you walked in you looked familiar. I thought about it, and I believe I have at home a picture of you and a friend of yours on a the ferry to Aran Islands. Amazing Aran Islands. Three islands situated right after the end of the world, netted with gray stone fences. Always when I talk to people about Ireland I ask them whether they’ve been to Connemara and Aran Islands. Although Aran Islands are quite popular among the tourists, to me this is like asking whether they’ve been to the moon. A stranger will not understand this, unless by chance the stranger appears in a photo you have at home. And the frustrating knowledge that a stranger will never understand is carried in the ocean air and is a part of what makes Aran Islands such a touching place.
